Second Chance Learning

Second-chance learning is an instructional strategy for increasing student mastery of course content. It includes re-teaching, additional practice, and an opportunity to demonstrate new learning on another assessment. The following information provides a rationale for second-chance learning, as well as guidelines and examples for effective implementation.

Maryland Youth Crisis Hotline

Community Crisis Services, Inc. is a ono-profit center that is a one-stop called in center for information and compassionate assistance for those in crisis. Call the Hotline will help individuals and families to access the mental health services and social service organiztion within the community. The Community Crisis Services, Inc. is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for anyone facing crisis and personal turmoil.

You may call 2-1-1 to speak with a Hotline Specialist of dial the statewide crisis hotline at 1-800-422-0009.

The Maryland Youth Crisis Hotline also has an on-line crisis chat service available Monday through Friday from 4:00 - 9:00pm.

Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line

 The Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line is an anonymous reporting system used to report threats to the safety and/or wellbeing of students. Students, parents, faculty, staff, and members of communities throughout Maryland may use this anonymous, app- and web-based reporting system to share their concerns, such as:

  • Mental health crises
  • Bullying
  • School and community violence
  • Drug activity
  • Abuse
  • Harassment

Other issues affecting our Maryland students.

The Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line is a tool for proactively addressing harmful situations and helping students who need it. By using a variety of communication modes to support the reporting and routing of tips, the Safe Schools Maryland Tip Line empowers the citizens of Maryland to create a culture of preparedness, prevention, and school safety for our students.

The SafeSchoolsMD app is available on The App Store and Google Play.

Directions for Putting a Home Button on Smartphones for Discovery Ed

  1. In your search engine (Chrome, Safari etc) type in carrollk12.org
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click on Student and Parent Resources und "Student and Parents"
  3. Scroll to the bottom again and click on WebApps
  4. Scroll to the bottom once again and click on Discovery Education
  5. If a sign in screen appears
    • User name is their school user name: name@star.carrollk12.org   
    • Password is the student's school password
  6. On an Apple:
    • Click on the middle icon looking like a rectangle with an arrow coming out of it
    • Swipe the icons above the word "cancel"  to the left until you see "Add to Home Screen"
    • Click
  7. Check your home screen and click to see if you were successful
