If your student will be attending a private school next year instead of Liberty High or ORMS, please notify the counseling office at ORMS so we can prepare your student’s records.
If you know that you will be moving over the summer and not be returning to ORMS, please contact Mrs. Bankard so she can prepare a transfer packet for you to take to your new school.
School counselors from Liberty High School met with 8th grade students today regarding high school planning and course requests for 2018-2019. Attached you will find a copy of the power point presented in classrooms. Students received a 2018-2019 Program of Studies, as well as a personalized Course Recommendation/Selection Sheet.
The Program of Studies book is an important and valuable resource that provides a wealth of information ranging from graduation requirements to course descriptions to career pathways. Please refer to the 2018-2019 Program of Studies throughout the next four years as only one copy is provided per student as they start their high school journey.
The Course Recommendation/Selection Sheet includes detailed information regarding teacher recommendations for ninth grade courses as well as general information to assist with the scheduling process. Please carefully review your students’ recommendations and address any questions with their current teachers. Comprehensive School Counseling Program
Carroll County Public School Counselors facilitate the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students. School Counselors are integral members of the instructional team. They directly impact student achievement by delivering comprehensive services that meet the needs of the 21st century school community.
Professional School Counselors are uniquely trained leaders who promote success for all students. They collaborate with school stakeholders using data-driven decisions to facilitate the success of the 21st century learner in an ever-changing society.
Individual Student Planning
Individual Counseling: Students discuss issues in a safe, positive, and confidential setting. Topics are based on the needs of the students and may include: goal-setting, changing families, peer relationships, stress management, understanding personal strengths and weaknesses, social skills, academic planning, bullying, career exploration, problem-solving, transition planning, and decision-making.
- Small Group Counseling: Students with similar issues and concerns work together to achieve their goals in a small group environment consisting of 3-10 peers. The group sessions usually last about 30 minutes and are held for approximately 6-10 weeks. Group topics are based on the needs of the students and may include divorce or changing families, grief and loss, friendship and social skills, organization, conflict resolution, anger management, self-esteem, and stress-management.
- Academic Interventions: Throughout the school year, counselors monitor student performance. If it is determined that a student is at risk for failing an academic course, counselors initiate participation in the Grade Recovery Program.
- Behavior Interventions and Support: Students whose behavior is negatively impacting their educational performance may be eligible to receive behavior interventions. Behavior interventions may be in the form of a discipline plan, goal chart, or functional behavioral assessment.
- Classroom Guidance: Counselors teach developmental skills using age-appropriate, classroom-based lessons. Topics may include self-esteem, conflict resolution, study skills, anger management, career exploration, high school planning, friendship/social skills, responsibility, respect, bullying/harassment, goal setting/decision-making, and peer pressure.
Consultation and Collaboration with School Staff and Parents: Counselors meet on a regular basis with school teams and other school staff to monitor student progress and design effective interventions. Parents are welcome to schedule meetings with their student's assigned counselor or request they be present at a meeting with the team.
