Service Learning

The Service-Learning Graduation Requirement was passed in 1992 by the Maryland State Department of Education. This requirement mandates that public school students earn a minimum of 75 hours of service-learning prior to graduation.

Definition of Service-Learning

Service-Learning is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to the real world; they then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between their service and their learning (Definition provided by Learning In Deed).

Tips and Reminders

  • Reflection forms expire 1 year after the completion of the activity.  Forms turned in after 1 year expiration will not be counted.
  • It is suggested that you keep a copy of each reflection form that is turned in.  Keeping a copy ensures that you also have a record of what you have done and can be used for various reasons, i.e. Portfolios, Applications, etc...
  • Please make sure reflection form is filled out completely except bottom portion.

  • Please return forms in a timely manner so hours can be reflected on the most recent Quarter Report Card. Cutoff dates per quarter are:

                                   1st Quarter-November 3, 2017

                                   2nd Quarter-January 19, 2018

                                   3rd Quarter-March 30, 2018
