The Service-Learning Graduation Requirement was passed in 1992 by the Maryland State Department of Education. This requirement mandates that public school students earn a minimum of 75 hours of service-learning prior to graduation.
Definition of Service-Learning
Service-Learning is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to the real world; they then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between their service and their learning (Definition provided by Learning In Deed).
Tips and Reminders
- Reflection forms expire 1 year after the completion of the activity. Forms turned in after 1 year expiration will not be counted.
- It is suggested that you keep a copy of each reflection form that is turned in. Keeping a copy ensures that you also have a record of what you have done and can be used for various reasons, i.e. Portfolios, Applications, etc...
Please make sure reflection form is filled out completely except bottom portion.
Please return forms in a timely manner so hours can be reflected on the most recent Quarter Report Card. Cutoff dates per quarter are:
1st Quarter-November 3, 2017
2nd Quarter-January 19, 2018
3rd Quarter-March 30, 2018
4th Quarter-June 1, 2018
(Forms turned in after June 1st may not be put into the system until the following school year)
