Level I (Spring of Junior Year, 3 credits)

Introduction to Networks

Introduction to Networks (ITN) covers networking architecture, structure, and functions. The course introduces the principles and structure of IP addressing and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations to provide a foundation for the curriculum. 

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Explain network technologies.
  • Explain how devices access local and remote network resources.
  • Describe router hardware.
  • Explain how switching operates in a small to medium-sized business network.
  • Design an IP addressing scheme to provide network connectivity for a small to medium-sized business network.
  • Configure initial settings on a network device.
  • Implement basic network connectivity between devices.
  • Configure monitoring tools available for small to medium-sized business networks.

This course is the 1st in the Programming/Cyber Ops (CISCO) Program. The course includes activities using Packet Tracer, hands-on lab work, and a wide array of assessment types and tools. 

 

Linux Essentials

The Linux Essentials course teaches students the fundamentals of the Linux operating system and command line, and basic open source concepts. 

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand how Linux is used and the basics of the command line.
  • Apply skills using Linux virtual machine with step-by-step and hands-on lab activities.
  • Build foundational knowledge for progressively mastering Linux commands.
  • Connect with the global Cisco Networking Academy community.

Students utilize a web browser to access the Linux Essentials content modules, lab exercises and virtual machines via Cisco NetAcad.com. Each learner has hands-on access to a Linux virtual machine to practice, explore, and test Linux command-line concepts. 

Certificate: LPI Linux Essentials Professional Development Certificate (MSDE Recognized End of course Exam) 

Cisco Lab

The Cisco Lab course allows students to complete a variety of projects and increase their competency in networking-related programming.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Configure settings on a network device.
  • Implement network connectivity between devices.
  • Configure monitoring tools available for small to medium-sized business networks.
  • Apply skills through practice, using labs and Cisco Packet Tracer activities.
  • Translate real-world issues into computer-solvable problems.

 

Level II (Fall of Senior Year, 3 credits)

Programming Essentials: Python

The Programming Essentials: Python course introduces student to the Python language. Python is a general-purpose programming language used to build just about anything.  Python is used for backend web development, data analysis, artificial intelligence and scientific computing, all of which are key for students pursuing IT careers. 

Students design, write, debug, and run programs encoded in the Python language.  No prior programming knowledge is required.  The course begins with the very basics, allowing students to become adept at solving more complex problems. 

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Develop a working knowledge for how computers operate and how computer programs are executed.
  • Evolve critical thinking and problem-solving skills using an algorithmic approach.
  • Learn about the programmer’s role in the software development process.
  • Translate real-world issues into computer-solvable problems.

The course includes hands-on practice activities and over 35 lab exercises to reinforce learning.

Certification: PCAP – Python Certified Associate Programmer

Cybersecurity Essentials

The Cybersecurity Essentials course develops foundational understanding of cybersecurity, and how it relates to information and network security. The course introduces students to characteristics of cyber-crime, security principles, technologies, and procedures to defend networks. Through interactive, multimedia content, lab activities, and multi-industry case studies, students build technical and professional skills to pursue careers in cybersecurity.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Learn procedures to implement data confidentiality, integrity, availability and security controls on networks, servers and applications.
  • Understand security principles and how to develop security policies that comply with cybersecurity laws.
  • Apply skills through practice, using labs and Cisco Packet Tracer activities.
  • Connect with the global Cisco Networking Academy community.

 

Cybersecurity Operations

The Cybersecurity Operations course provides an introduction to the knowledge and skills needed for a Security Analyst working with a Security Operations Center team. It teaches core security skills needed for monitoring, detecting, investigating, analyzing and responding to security events, thus protecting systems and organizations from cybersecurity risks, threats and vulnerabilities.  

By the end of the course, students will be prepared to:

  • Understand cybersecurity operations network principles, roles and responsibilities as well as the related technologies, tools, regulations and frameworks available.
  • Apply knowledge and skills to monitor, detect, investigate, analyze and respond to security incidents.
  • Apply for entry-level jobs as Associate Security Analyst and Incident Responder.
  • Take the Cisco CCNA Cybersecurity Operations Certification exam.

CCNA Cybersecurity Operations is a hands-on, career-oriented course with an emphasis on practical experience to help students develop specialized skills to successfully handle the tasks, duties, and responsibilities of an associate-level Security Analyst working in a Security Operations Center (SOC).
