A geographic information system (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographical data. The main component of GIS is its layers both geographic (spatial) coupled with information such as building, roads, topography, political boundaries, school districts which are referenced to places on the map and infused with data and information such as level of household income, education, political affiliation and unlimited amounts of data. Combining these layers allows GIS to be such an effective problem solving tool through spatial analysis. Layers of information are combined with geospatial software and tools, to enable spatial analysis, manage large datasets, and display information in a map/graphical form with endless applications to law enforcement, military, business, agriculture, emergency management, distribution, migration, and so much more.
