Option 1: Certified Nursing Assistant This course is designed to provide students the information needed to provide basic patient care, their role as part of the healthcare team, disease processes, and infection control and safety issues.  Students will assume the role of the CNA in a long-term care facility under the supervision of an instructor where the student will build upon the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom by providing hands-on care to residents/patients. Classroom and clinical portions of this course meet all requirements to be eligible for CNA certification in Maryland and prepares students for the Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) exam and national certification.   

In the spring of the student's senior year, Certified Nursing  Assistant students will be placed in a specialized course according to interests and qualifications.  Some of those placements MIGHT include:

Surgical and Healthcare Technology:  This course introduces students to the role of a surgical technologist in an operating room setting as well as principles of sterile technique, operating room procedures, and surgical instruments.  Students will also learn advanced CNA skills including wound care, IV therapy, and electrocardiogram procedure and interpretation.  Course includes theory and a clinical component.

Certified Clinical Medical Assistant: This course is designed to train the student in many routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep physician, podiatry, urgent care and other health practitioner offices running smoothly.  Administrative topics include appointment scheduling, coding, billing and records management.  Clinical topics include safety and infection control, assessment and examination procedures, assisting with medications, assisting the practitioner with treatments/minor procedures, laboratory skills includinge phlebotomy, EKG recording and interpretation, and patient education techniques.  Course includes theory and clinical components.  Upon successful completion of classroom and clinic components, students are eligible to take the certification exam through National Healthcareer Association.

Patient Care Technician Internship:  This course is designed to teach students advanced patient care skills such as wound care, IV therapy, electrocardiogram recording and interpretation and phlebotomy.  This course has an internship component in the acute care setting, Carroll Hospital Center.  Internship is a system of learning that links students, schools, and workplaces to provide students with meaningful credentials, experiences and skills that prepare them for their transition to further education, careers and adulthood. 

CNA/GNA Internship: Career Connections is a system of learning that links students, schools, and workplaces to provide students with meaningful credentials, experiences and skills that prepare them for their transition to further education, careers and adulthood.  The Internship course consists of an internship at an appropriate workplace, classwork, and mentored project assignments.

Option 2: Physical Rehabilitation This course is designed to provide students the information needed to provide basic rehabilitative care, their role as part of the healthcare team, disease processes, and infection control and safety issues.  In addition, students will be exposed to varied careers related to the physical rehabilitation field.  This course integrates concepts of physical therapy, occupational therapy, kinesiology, and growth and development over the human life span.  Students will focus on musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary and integumentary physiology, related injuries, diseases and disorders.  Students will also focus on preventative activites, therapeutic practices and rehabilitation.  Course includes theor and a clinical component.  

   In the spring of the student's senior year, Physical Rehabilitation students will be place in a healthcare/rehabilitation internship according to interests and qualifications.

  • Note: Students in the Academy of Health Professions program are required to complete a Health Evaluation, including tuberculosis screening and immunity titers, as well as a drug screening to work in the healthcare facilities necessary for the completion of this program.  This program is physically demanding as students are caring for REAL patients which requires the ability to support and move those patients in a safe manner.
  • Students must have reliable transportation to and from CCCTC and clinical/internship sites.
  • Students must have medical insurance coverage while in the program.
  • Students of the CNA tract will need a form of government photo identification by December of the enrolled school year. (i.e. driver's license/permit, passport, ID card)
  1. Our programs are run like real businesses!  Do you have the work ethic, perseverance, professionalism, and problem solving skills needed to be successful in Academy of Health Professions? 
  2. Prerequisites: Chemistry II is a prerequisite and Human Anatomy is strongly recommended
  3. Qualities and characteristics you will need:
  • AP/Transcripted level classwork
  • Able to memorize large amount of information to function in the lab or clinic area
  • Computer and technical skills to use charting, office, lab and medical equipment
  • Detail orientation to notice small changes in patients’ symptoms or data records
  • High interest in Mathematics and Science
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple projects
  • People orientation to work with a variety of medical professionals and clients
  • Physical stamina to stand for long periods of time and lift equipment and/or patients
  • Problem-solving skills to analyze situations or data and produce appropriate solutions

  • Speaking and listening skills to make sure patients understand treatments and medical concepts

 Maryland State Board of Nursing  allows our students to become certified based on clinical hours and a written exam.  Certification by state agencies assures parents and students that the skills we teach are relevant and important in today's job market.  A program's certifications must be renewed usually every three years through an onsite evaluation of the program.

Carroll Community College, Frederick Community College, Penn College of Technology, and Stevenson University  An agreement based on the college's requirements for curriculum, faculties, and instructor is prepared and renewed periodically to guarantee that students are getting the equivalent instruction at CCCTC that would be expected in class at that institution.  Credits are awarded based on that agreement. Program Advisory Committee  By federal and state regulations, each program has a group of local business and educational institutions that periodically meets to discuss  the program's curriculum and resources to make sure current trends in technology and skills are being taught so that students are prepared for the ever changing career requirements for that industry.  (more)
