Physical Education
Every elementary student participates in developmentally appropriate physical education class for ninety minutes per week. The elementary curriculum is based on the following themes: fitness, throwing/catching, striking, movement education, and group challenges/initiatives. A variety of sports and movement activities are incorporated to provide a foundation of knowledge of lifetime fitness and sport skills.
Standards-Based Physical Education
Standards-based physical education is a carefully designed instructional program that provides all students with opportunities to acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to engage in a lifetime of meaningful and healthful physical activity. The State standards and grade-level outcomes for physical education are based on the four learning domains:
**All students are expected to dress appropriately for class. This includes clothing that allows freedom of movement and athletic footwear, ensuring that students are able to participate fully and safely.**
Adapted Physical Education
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) continues to include the curriculum content area of physical education. All students, including students with disabilities, are required to participate in physical education instruction. A specially designed physical education service for a student with a disability is adapted physical education.
