Role of the Curriculum Council
- Attend Council Meetings - There are four morning meetings each school year. The agendas of these meetings center on presentations and discussion of current curriculum and school improvement initiatives and issues, and textbook adoption.
- Develop a Working Knowledge of Curriculum Goals, Trends, and Issues.
- Network with Supervisors to Communicate Local Concerns and Issues Regarding Curriculum and School Improvement.
- Communicate Curriculum Trends and Issues with Individual Parents, Parent Groups, and the Home School.
- Review and Recommend Instructional Materials Proposed for Adoption. - Theses materials have been recommended by content area supervisors as content and level appropriate. Therefore, Council members review materials for the following factors:
- Language usage and illustrations consistent with community standards.
- Accurate recognition of minorities and ethnic groups.
- Avoidance of stereotypes.
- As Needed, Provide Input and Response to the Superintendent Regarding Issues Facing Carroll County in its Challenge to Bring about Continuous School Improvement.

Approval of Instructional Materials
Titles of approved materials found in the links below have been vetted and approved by the Carroll County Public Schools Curriculum Council and our Board of Education. Each year, the Curriculum Council examines the textbook materials that have been recommended by the instructional supervisors and reviews materials for specific factors.

Titles of materials considered for possible use in schools for school year 2023-2024 were available for community members to review through May 2023. This list of materials were approved by the Board of Education in June 2023.
Consideration of Textbooks and Instructional Materials for 2023-2024
Factors
- meets community standards for language content;
- provides appropriate, accurate, and non-biased subject and grade level content;
- provides accurate and appropriate recognition of cultural diversity;
- represents appropriate and current technologies; and,
- provides for a stereotype-free presentation, except when historically appropriate.

After review, discussion, and voting procedures, the Curriculum Council's list of textbooks recommended for approval is sent to the Board of Education for further review. The materials are available for public review throughout the process.
Council members are vital to this process, and they are the vehicle for community voice and representation. Chaired by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
Meeting Dates and Times
For school year 2023-2024, the Curriculum Council is scheduled to meet from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on the following dates: November 17, January 12 (snow date January 19), March 8 (snow date March 15), and May 10. The exact location of each meeting are yet to be determined. Members will receive an email prior to each meeting this this information. Textbooks and instructional materials submitted for adoption may be reviewed during March and April, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the Central Office.
