Tech Center Teacher Named Finalist for Craft Instructor of the Year

Michael Schweinsberg, welding teacher at the Carroll County Career and Technology Center, has been selected as one of three finalists for 2023 Craft Instructor of the Year by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC).

The Craft Instructor of the Year Award is presented to an instructor who possesses outstanding creativity, a positive attitude and the ability to transfer knowledge through communications skills and innovative teaching to promote lifelong learning to the future construction workforce.

The welding program is always at full capacity and has a waiting list of more than 20 students each year. As a National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) registered instructor, Schweinsberg teaches the CORE and Welding I curriculum with tremendous success. He is industry-driven and knows what is needed for students to succeed, not just in the shop and classroom, but in the workforce.

Shop safety is his first priority, and he excels at establishing a rapport with his students. Discipline is seldom needed since the students immediately buy in to his teaching style that gives and expects respect. The success of graduated students that leave his program is beyond impressive.

Schweinsberg works hard to ensure that students take advantage of the many scholarships and competitions available to them to show their talent. He is very involved in the SkillsUSA welding competitions and is the first to volunteer for fundraisers and after-school activities and events. He was recently assigned as one of the seven school leadership team members and heads the Social Wellness/Student Culture Committee.

According to masonry teacher Mike Campanile, who nominated Schweinsberg for the award, “Students love his passion, his approach to teaching welding, the relationships he develops with each class, and his attention to the soft skills the industry is starving for. There is nothing sugar-coated with him, and students love the reality of the real working world that his program reflects.”

All three finalists will be featured in an upcoming issue of Construction Executive magazine and in ABC’s weekly e-newsletter, Newsline. The recipient will be announced at the ABC Convention to be held  March 14-17, 2023, in Kissimmee, Florida, and will receive a cash prize.
