Michael Stencil, media specialist at East Middle School, is featured as the Maryland Association of School Librarians’ Spotlight Librarian of the Month.
Stencil has been a school librarian for 13 years and is currently the chairperson of the Carroll County Media Advisory Committee. He looks forward each day that he can highlight many books for students, teach about digital citizenship, collaborate with teachers, interact with the community, support students with databases, and more. He also helps many other media specialists with streaming their morning news programs and shares tips on streaming software.
His favorite library program has been Locked in to Reading, which he developed along with media specialist Laurie Owings. During this after-school activity, students participate in an escape room that focuses on critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and reading. Students read books and then use related clues and solve puzzles to “escape” from the room.
Stencil is the second consecutive CCPS media specialist to earn the designation of Spotlight Librarian of the Month. Danielle Schwessinger from Elmer Wolfe Elementary School was the focus of last month’s spotlight.
