For many years, the Carroll County Public School System has partnered with Chief Joseph Ole Tipanko to exchange educational thoughts and programs. We have had the pleasure of welcoming him to our county from Nairobi, Kenya, to visit our schools. He most recently visited Ebb Valley, Eldersburg, Friendship Valley, and Spring Garden Elementary Schools during the week of October 16, 2017, to share information and help develop an understanding of the Maasai culture.
During this recent visit, the school system learned that Chief Joseph’s community, the Maasai of the Kimuka Region of Kenya, is in desperate need of a clean and reliable source of water for their own consumption and for agricultural purposes. This has been a struggle for years, but the current drought in Kenya has significantly intensified the problem.
The Maasai community is conducting a fundraising effort with the goal of raising approximately $20,000 in 2017. They have already secured a matching fund commitment of $6,000 to start the fund. If you would like to make a donation, please visit www.kimukamaasaiwaterproject.org for more information about the project, including the complete project proposal, a cost estimate, how to donate, and contact information.
