Tim Blizzard, Applied Mechanical Engineering instructor at the Carroll County Career and Technology Center, and his students recently collaborated with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (APL) Advanced Mechanical Fabrication area on a NASA mission.

The students built a gondola for SUNRISE3, a NASA balloon program carrying instruments to examine the magnetic fields of the sun. They had built several dozen parts for the gondola by mid-March.

The project gave students an opportunity to build mission hardware in their classroom and to obtain real-life experience and develop their skills. Although the project was suspended due to the COVID-19 school closures, the students hope to collaborate with APL on future projects.
