Northwest Middle School has been recognized as an Excellence in Gifted and Talented Education (EGATE) School for Maryland by the Maryland Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education and the Maryland State Department of Education.

This program honors exceptional elementary, middle, and high schools that offer gifted and talented programs aligned with the Maryland Criteria for Excellence: Gifted and Talented Program Guidelines and the Code of Maryland Regulations. Schools were required to submit a comprehensive portfolio, which provided documentation of 21 different criteria under 4 program objectives. These objectives include Student Identification, Curriculum and Instruction, Professionally Qualified Teachers and Professional Development, and Program Management and Evaluation.

As an EGATE School, Northwest Middle School will receive citations from the Governor and the Maryland State Department of Education and will be recognized at a statewide event on February 11, 2020. The school also will participate in the 2020 EGATE Showcase and Networking event in the spring. Northwest also will serve as a model for others seeking to achieve EGATE status or improve their school programs and services.
