The 11th Annual Roar of the Robots, a For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) LEGO League (FLL) Challenge Qualifying Tournament, will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Carroll Community College in Westminster, Maryland. The event is free and open to the public.

Nearly 200 elementary and middle school students on 27 teams from public, private, and home schools will compete against each other at the tournament. Seven of the teams are affiliated with Carroll County Public Schools and the remainder teams supported by Partnership and Inspiration for Engineering Education and Entrepreneurship (PIE3).

The nonprofit PIE3 and its flagship robotics team, Robo-Lions FRC Team 2199, are the planners and hosts of the event, along with Carroll County Public Schools, Carroll Community College, and FIRST LEGO of Maryland.  Many of the referees and volunteers for the event are high school students and members of either Robo-Lions or other high school FRC teams.

The tournament will give students an opportunity to engage in hands-on learning. This year’s theme is “City Shaper.” FLL members, ranging from grades four to eight, have been working hard with their respective teams since September to prepare for this qualifying tournament. FLL requires students to design a robot based on LEGO MINDSTORMS® EV3 robots to accomplish specific tasks carried out on a four-by-eight-foot field.

In addition to their robot missions, the teams identify a problem with a building or public space in the community, design an innovative solution, and share the solution with others. This event is one of more than 20 statewide qualifying tournaments hosted by the Maryland FIRST LEGO League Committee. Top teams move on to the State Tournament in the spring at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Younger teams participating in Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr. FLL) for kindergarteners to third graders will have an Expo from 10 to 11 a.m. The main public event will be the FLL Robot Tournament, which will start with opening ceremonies around 12:15 p.m. Following an awards presentation, the event will conclude at 3:30 p.m. Outside food and drinks are not permitted. The Canteen Cafe, located on the first floor of Building K at the College, will be open during the event.
