Ken Mihalyov, a science teacher at West Middle School has led all Team Galaxy students to participate in the “You Have the Power to End ALS” fundraiser this year. In total, students have raised and secured sponsor donations totaling $10,891.15. After taking out event costs (shirts, pizza, etc.), the actual donation to the MD/DC/VA Chapter of the ALS Association will be just over $9,500.
This is the most a single group from West Middle has raised since Mihalyov began fundraising with students 8 years ago. In total, during the last 8 years, his students have raised over $55,000 for charity.
This year’s event will culminate on Wednesday, May 22, 2019, with the group Ice Bucket Challenge dump that will include 2 administrators, 1 school counselor, at least 3 teachers, and approximately 20 students who individually raised over $150 for ALS this year. The Ice Bucket Challenge dump will take place in the outdoor pavilion area from 1:05 to 1:35 p.m. with the entire team joining in to observe.
Donations this year were received from 122 students and a handful of teachers and staff members. The incentives for students’ active participation included earning an event shirt, pizza party, and possible participation in the group Ice Bucket Challenge dump. Additionally, students will be participating in Minute to Win It style games during science class to demonstrate the power they have and challenge their ability to be successful.
As in previous years, Mihalyov’s hair has been offered up as a “reward” as well. Students have been attempting to reach a team goal of $10,000 in order to make him get a Pineapple Haircut. After 4 years, they have finally reached their goal, and Mihalyov will be getting his hair cut and dyed to look like a pineapple on Tuesday, May 21, in order to share the beautiful style with students on the day of the final celebration.
“We are very excited at the success we have had this year fundraising, and several students found it in their hearts to not only find donors and sponsors, but also to donate some of their own money toward the cause,” Mihalyov said. I am aware of at least one student who donated over $100 of his own savings from holiday gifts!”
