Carroll County Teacher of the Year Tina Thomen, an English teacher and English Department Chair/Content Liaison at Manchester Valley High School, has been selected as one of seven finalists for Maryland Teacher of the Year.
The finalists were selected by a panel of judges from a number of key Maryland education organizations representing principals, teachers, school boards, teacher unions, parents, and higher education. All finalists were chosen based on a rigorous set of state and national criteria that include teaching philosophy and results, community involvement, knowledge of general education issues, and suggestions for professional and instructional improvement. The finalists were selected from a group of 24 local teachers of the year, representing the 24 Maryland school systems.
The 2018-2019 Maryland Teacher of the Year will be announced during a gala reception and dinner at Martin’s West in Baltimore on October 12, 2018. The Maryland Teacher of the Year will go on to compete for the esteemed National Teacher of the Year Award, to be announced next April. Maryland’s Teacher of the Year will also spend the coming year as an educational speaker and advisor in Maryland and will be honored by the President at the White House next spring. The Maryland Teacher of the Year will also participate in several national meetings and conferences.
Tina Thomen earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and History from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) in 1992. In 2006, she earned a Master of Science in Education from McDaniel College and in 2015 she earned a Master of Liberal Arts, also from McDaniel College. In 2016, Thomen completed coursework at Common Ground on the Hill at McDaniel College to support Education That is Multicultural and Green School initiatives for Manchester Valley High School.
Prior to working in the field of education, Thomen worked in the finance industry. She began her teaching career as a substitute teacher for Carroll County Public Schools in 2005. From 2007-2009 she was an English teacher at Liberty High School. Later in 2009, she started teaching English at Manchester Valley High School where she has taught AP Language and Composition, all ability levels in grades 9-11, HSA and Bridge Remediation, and several electives.
Throughout her teaching career, Thomen has served as a lead curriculum writer, an AP Language and Composition Reader for the Educational Testing Service, and an advisor for the Newspaper Club and the National English Honor Society at Manchester Valley High School. She mentors student teachers and interns from Carroll Community College and McDaniel College and is a lead professional developer in the area of English Language Arts. Thomen is a National Board Certified Teacher who has presented at the National Council for Teachers of English Language Conference and has been honored as a finalist four times for the Carroll County Teacher of the Year.
