During the 2nd annual Culture Expo on Friday, August 24, 2018, Valery Dennis was named the Education That Is Multicultural (ETM) Teacher of the Year and Glen Messier was named the ETM Administrator of the Year.

Valery Dennis, media specialist at Manchester Valley High School, has been the central presence this year creating the Maverick Minority Clubs at Manchester Valley High School.  She was instrumental in meeting the needs of their minority community during some difficult times. Through her leadership, she rallied other teachers to create the Black Student Union, Minority Mavericks, and Allies student groups. Dennis worked tirelessly setting up clubs, bringing in outside speakers, and setting up field trips. She has created a safe space for students to ask important questions, advocate for themselves, and plan events that support a more inclusive learning environment at Manchester Valley High School.

Glen Messier, principal of Mechanicsville Elementary School, is actively involved in school and community events that support Education That is Multicultural. He incorporates principles of ETM in leadership and professional development.  He is currently taking courses through McDaniel College’s Equity and Excellence certification program and works to implement and share his learning within the school community. Messier serves as a resource and role model for other teachers and staff.  Through his leadership, he promotes a welcoming and positive school climate for all students and staff.
