The Liberty High School FFA Horse Evaluation team placed 1st in the state competition, which was held on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at the University of Maryland, College Park. The team will now move on to compete at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, this fall.
Individually, all of the Liberty students won gold medals: 1st place - Molly Gaskin, 3rd place - Alyssa Kelly, 4th place- Sophia Patton, 5th place - Grace Hamilton, and 6th place - Michela Bernarding. The FFA Advisor for Liberty High School is Katy Macleod.
In addition, the Manchester Valley High School team placed 4th. Team members included Mykenzie Smith, Maggie Ryan, and Breanna Sylves. Individually, Smith placed 9th and Ryan placed 14th. The FFA Advisor for Manchester Valley High School is Anna Warner.
Kandace Tignor from Westminster High School placed 10th overall and had the highest reasons score in the Hunter class. This is the first time she has participated in the judging. Emily Hester is the FFA Advisor at Westminster High School.
More than 50 students and 15 teams from across the state of Maryland participated in the competition. The teams spent 3 hours judging 8 classes of horses and then appeared in front of the judges to defend their placings for two of the classes.
