A Brief History of West Middle School
In September of 1958 Westminster Junior High School, now West Middle School, opened its doors to 613 students, grades five through eight. The first Principal was George Thomas who later went on to become superintendent of schools.
In 1963, the fifth and sixth grades moved to the newly constructed William Winchester Elementary school next door and ninth grade was added to the Junior High School.
In 1971, ninth graders moved to the newly opened Westminster High School. The Junior High School was renamed Westminster West Middle and since then it has been home to only sixth through eighth graders.
In the 1990s, West Middle expanded when a new auxiliary gymnasium and media center were constructed to accommodate the growing number of students. Parents raised funds and local businesses made contributions to build a beautiful gazebo which now serves as our Outdoor Classroom. of students.
Most recently, in 2007 the school has seen some modern renovations. These renovations include air conditioning system and new windows throughout the school. In the spring of 2008, West Middle staff and students came together to improve the environment and conserve energy. These efforts helped us achieve our current Green School Status. We will continue to improve our school and environment in the years to come.
