Media
Get ready! April is School Library Media Month! This year we will be having a celebration of Scieszka. Students will be reading a variety of books by our former Ambassador to Children's Literature, Jon Scieszka. He has written some great picture books, a wonderful chapter book series, and a personal memoir about growing up in the 1950's. Jon Scieszka has a his own website http://jsworldwide.com/, as well as his GUYS READ site http://www.guysread.com/, which promotes reading for boys. Both sites are well designed and a lot of fun! Here are some great titles that both parents and students will enjoy:
The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales
The Frog Prince Continued
Math Curse
Science Verse
The Time Warp Trio (chapter book series)
Knucklehead (Scieszka's memoir)
The Winfield Media Center houses over 17,000 items, including books, magazines, videos, and professional journals. The media center has 10 computers available for student and teacher use. Applications include internet access to online databases for research, word processing, Kidspiration, and Microsoft PowerPoint. Students in grades 1 through 5 visit the media center once a week for 30 minutes, and kindergarten students visit the media center twice each week. In addition to checking out books, students are engaged in a variety of activities designed to strengthen their research and critical thinking skills. Areas covered include literature, locating and collecting data and information, organizing and interpreting data and information, and ethical sharing of information.
The TumbleBook Library is a collection of animated, talking e-books, TumblePuzzles, and TumbleQuizzes. Winfield Elementary has a subscription to Tumblebooks for our students in grades K-5 to enjoy at school and from home with their families.
