National Honor Society
The local chapter of the N.H.S. was chartered in 1946 with the purpose of fostering scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Students who meet the initial criteria for admission ( a weighted cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher, and have been in high school for three consecutive semesters) will receive an application in his/her homeroom by the beginning of March. Once the packet is reviewed by the Faculty N.H.S. committee, students will be informed if they have been accepted into the organization. Likewise, if a student is not admitted, he/she will be provided with a statement of the reasons for non-acceptance. At the student's request, the admission form may be reactivated the following year. As a change from the past, there will only be one induction ceremony a year, therefore, only Sophomores and Juniors will be inducted in April of each year.
In order to become eligible for the National Honor Society, a student must:
1. Have a cumulative weighted average of 3.75 or higher in all subjects receiving letter grades.
2. Carry a full schedule of classes. Work release students and other exceptions must be approved by the faculty N.H.S. Committee.
3. Submit the completed admission selection forms, including four sponsor forms, of which three must be faculty or staff of Westminster High School; one may be an adult from the community.
In order to maintain membership in the N.H.S. the student must:
1. Maintain a weighted average of 3.75 or higher in all subjects receiving letter grades.
2. Attend 75% of N.H.S. meetings unless excused by the advisor and 75% in assigned committee work. Those who do not attend may be dropped from membership.
3. Maintain the standards of character and integrity as set forth in the membership oath. If a student drops below the standards of membership for a semester, he/she is placed on academic probation. If the student does not raise the average by the end of the next semester, the membership in the N.H.S. is lost, and the student will not be eligible to re-enter.
Requirements for membership are subject to change at each meeting of the faculty N.H.S. Committee, providing that such changes apply only to future members. The Society sponsors a tutoring service, school-wide-recycling, fund-raising projects, and other services to the school and to mankind.
*Students may not receive his/her pin and sash if all the requirements are not met within his/her Junior and Senior year. If the student did pay for the pin and sash, but will not be receiving them due to inability to meet the requirements, they may see the adviser for a full refund. Each year those requirements include 5 hours of tutoring, 75% of N.H.S. meetings and committee meetings, one day of recycling, and participation in at least 2 fundraising projects.
