TES Physical Education

Welcome to the Taneytown Elementary Physical Education website.

Taneytown Elementary School is fortunate to be able to provide students with 90 minutes of physical education each week under the instruction of Miss. Connie Wuenschel and Ms. Katie Rogers. Students in grades K-2 participate in three 30-minute lessons per week and students in grades 3-5 participate in one 30-minute and one 60-minute lesson per week. Be sure to check your child’s P.E. schedule to find out what days to bring those sneakers!

Miss Wuenschel  and Ms. Rogers create and recreate a highly successful physical education program that engages children of diverse backgrounds, in learning experiences that stimulate, nourish and enrich not only their physical health, skill and fitness, but also their cognitive, emotional and social health, skill and fitness as well.

Self-pacing, self-challenging activities, and cooperative groups, are two of the strategies used to differentiate instruction so that all students can find success and be positively affirmed in their physical education experiences. Students are presented with a balanced curriculum of instruction that follow the Maryland State Curriculum. Units may be suited to individual, partner or team activities. Some may emphasize content knowledge, while others focus on fitness, rhythms, movement education and/or skill development. Special activities, such as the Turkey Bowl, Scooter City, Multi-Cultural Games, the Fitness Fair, etc. highlight the creative, child-centered physical education program, and are events that the students look forward to with much anticipation during the year. Students are encouraged to work hard to be selected as the “P.E. Student of the Week.” Such an honor entitles these hard-working students to play in one of three student-faculty games (kickball, basketball, and cricket) scheduled during the year. New activities and units are regularly woven into the program to keep it fresh and exciting for students (and their P.E. teachers as well!).  A list of special program events for the upcoming school year, will be posted soon.

During the 2008-2009 school year, TES Physical Education was the first school in the state of Maryland to be recognized by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) as a STARS school for quality physical Education. We are proud of this accomplishment, and thank you for taking the time to visit our virtual gymnasium!
