Service Learning

The Service-Learning Graduation Requirement was passed in 1992 by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). This requirement mandates that public school students earn a minimum of 75 hours of service-learning prior to graduation. For more information visit the MSDE web site at http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/MSDE/programs/servicelearning/docs/requirements.htm

Tracking Service-Learning Hours

Course-related service-learning hours are automatically added (upon successful completion of the course) to the student's permanent record and appear on each report card beginning in 6th grade. Hours are also placed on the student's transcripts if they transfer out of the Carroll County School System. Students who attend CCPS 6th Grade Outdoor School will earn ten hours; an additional ten hours can be earned when a student completes a project from the Outdoor School packet provided at the conclusion of the program.

Independent service-learning hours must be documented on a Service-Learning Reflection Form and returned to the Guidance Office at SMS within one year from the date the service is performed. If you are not sure if a specific activity is acceptable, please refer to the web site below. If you still have questions, contact the Service Learning Coordinator at our school. Service-Learning Reflection Forms can be obtained in our Guidance Office, Main Office, or your can print one from the CCPS Service learning Web site.
