Fitness Club

Fitness club is held during 'Success' time and is open to all grades.  60 students are chosen to participate and they come to the gym or go outside to participate in some type of fitness activity and/or workout in the weight room.  This is for students who enjoy being active and participating in fitness activities.

Multicultural Club

As a member of the Multicultural Leadership Club you will have the opportunity to encourage an appreciation and understanding of diversity within our school. Members of the MLC will be responsible for activities during school, bi-weekly meetings after school, and may be invited to attend the annual Middle School Multicultural Leadership Conference in November. It is important for the members to demonstrate commitment, leadership, responsibility and enthusiasm. Recent projects this club has completed are: Diversity Mural, Spanish Culture Art Exhibit, Book Drive for the village of Zenway in Ethiopia, Africa and National Mix It Up at Lunch Day.

Pond Club

Early in the new school year, students in 6th Grade will be given the opportunity to join.  Pond Club meets weekly for one hour during the Fall to help maintain the pond area.  Mulching, pond filter maintenance, weeding, planting, edging and refilling the bird feeders are just a few of the tasks assigned to members.  Pond Club will reconvene in the Spring to prepare the area for the Summer months.  Service Learning Hours are earned upon completion of the Service Learning Reflection form.

Green Team

The Green Team is a group of students from all grades who meet on specific Tuesday's after school to learn about how to protect the environment and plan activities to increase the environmental awareness of the Sykesville community.

Activities range from creating awareness campaigns like 'Idle Free February' and 'ReUseableBagaPalooza' to letter writing, energy audits and creating natural habitats.

If you are concerned about the earth and want to make a difference in reducing your ecological footprint, then the Green Team is happy to have you!

Students must have a signed permission form before they may attend.  See Mrs. Mayo, in the Media Center, for details.

Guitar Club

This club meets during 'Success' periods, as well as after school.  It is for students of all skill levels who are looking to learn to play the guitar or increase their skill level.  In this group, students enjoy learning from each other and are welcome to bring electric guitars and amplifiers to club meetings.

Scorpion Singers

The Scorpion Singers is open to all Sykesville Middle School students.  We spend rehearsals learning and singing popular songs often suggested by the group members.  (There are also numerous solo opportunities for the group members.)

In the Fall, the Scorpion Singers perform in the Winter concert and in the Spring, they perform at the Jazz Ensemble concert.

Rehearsals are on Thursdays after school.

S.H.O.U.T.

S.H.O.U.T. is for students interested in meeting during the school year to discuss trends and issues amongst peers, plan and participate in community service projects and advocate abstaining from alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

Interested students must apply at the end of the school year for the following school year.  Meetings are held once or twice a month.  The S.H.O.U.T. Club will help plan and participate in 'Red Ribbon Week' (usually scheduled in the Fall)

Community service projects include:  Cancer Recover Toy Drive, Teacher Appreciation Week and the Gift of Sight.  Club members who actively and regularly participate can earn up to 25 Service Learning Hours at the discretion of Ms. Bohinc.

Student Government Association

The SGA  is a club for eighth grade students to become more familiar with issues facing their school,  Carroll County and the state of Maryland. This club will create, review and vote on bills trying to be passed by the Carroll County Student Government, attend general assembly meetings at the various high schools and promote fundraisers for Sykesville Middle School. This is a great opportunity for students to get involved in student government and try and lobby for issues that matter to them.

   Lego League

Lego League offers students in 6-8th grade an opportunity to participate in a competitive robotics competition that uses the Lego NXT robotics system. Students solve a simulated design challenge by using the robot to move through a course, pick up objects, and return to home base. Students will be exercising skills in programming and technological problem solving. Students will then compete against other schools in the area to see which team can complete the most missions successfully in the 2011-2012 season.

For the 2011-2012 school year, the club will meet  after school.  Announcements during AM Homeroom will be made in early September to sign-up. Sign-up is on a first come first
basis.
