Art

All students, kindergarten through fifth grade, receive an hour of art instruction each week.  Along with creating art and expressing themselves, students learn about artists, art history, art styles, different cultures, and art techniques.  Student art work is displayed in the halls, the main display case, on this web site, and in different exhibits throughout the year.

Health

Kindergarten has one 30 minute health class, grades 1 and 2 have two 30 minute health class, and grades 3-5 have one 60 minute health class.

Physical Education
Physical Education classes meet 3 days per week for 30 minutes for grades 1 and 2. Grades 3 , 4, and 5 meet twice per week for one 30 minute class and one 60 minute class. Tennis shoes are required for participation as well as proper clothing for physical activities. Jewelry and other loose objects which cause safety implications should not be worn on PE days.
Vocal Music

Students in grades K-5 receive Vocal Music instruction from a music specialist for one hour each week. All grades follow the CCPS Vocal Music Essential Curriculum, and use the Share the Music textbook. In addition, there are numerous performing opportunities available throughout the elementary years.

    • learn songs and stories from other cultures
    • learn to maintain a steady beat
    • discover their singing voices
  • GRADE ONE STUDENTS
    • sing in tune within a small range
    • maintain a steady beat
    • listen to a wide variety of musical genres
    • read pitches and notes using the Kodaly system
    • move following the Dalcroze system
  • GRADE TWO STUDENTS
    • continue all of the grade one skills
    • expand the “in-tune” singing range
    • read more difficult rhythms
    • sing, play, and move to the pentatonic scale
  • GRADE THREE STUDENTS
    • continue all of the previous grades’ skills
    • study of the music of China
    • examine orchestral and band instruments
    • study American folk songs of the Appalachian region
    • learn to play the Soprano Recorder
  • GRADE FOUR STUDENTS
    • continue all of the previous grades’ skills
    • read increasingly difficult rhythms and major and minor modes
    • learn about different cultures through folk songs
    • participate in fourth grade chorus
    • present the Spring Chorus program
  • GRADE FIVE STUDENTS
    • continue all of the previous grades’ skills with the addition of a study of music history by listening to and reading about a wide variety of representative composers.
    • participate in fifth grade chorus
    • present the Winter Chorus program
    • fifth graders have the opportunity to audition for participation in the Eisteddfod, a select County wide chorus
    • prepare music for major theatrical productions and the Fifth Grade Graduation
