Welcome to Sandymount's Media Center
|
The Sandymount Media Center houses over 10,000 items, including books, magazines, videos, and DVDs. The media center has 17 computers available for student and teacher use. Applications include Internet access, Microsoft Office, Kidspiration, Online Databases, and ActivInspire. The media center is also home to our WMUNK News studio. Students who visit the media center are engaged in a variety of activities designed to strengthen their research and critical thinking skills. |
The goal of the media program is for students to become independent users of the library and of information. Students receive instruction in research and library skills, media literacy, media production, and reading. This instruction is integrated with classroom instruction as much as possible. Students in first and second grade visit the media center once a week for 30 minutes. Students in third, fourth, and fifth visit the media center every other week for 30 minutes. These students also visit the media center with their teachers for media lessons integrated into various subject areas.
Sandymount's PTA sponsors an annual Scholastic Book Fair, held in the media center. The bookfair is a great way for students to find fun books to read while supporting our school. The PTA gives a portion of the proceeds to the media center to fund additional materials for the students to use.
Desinty OPAC is our library's catalog. Students and teachers can access Destiny OPAC from any computer in the school. Destiny OPAC can also be accessed from home. Click on the icon below to connect.
Media Assistants and Volunteers
Students in fourth and fifth grade volunteer as media assistants in the morning and afternoons. Students are responsible for straightening shelves, checking in and out books, routing magazines, shelving and processing books, and making deliveries. Interested students can pick up an application from Ms. Boggs.
Parents can volunteer regularly in the media center or just drop in to put some books away. We need parent volunteers to help check in and out, shelve books, assist students, process materials, and to help with a variety of other tasks. Please call or drop by the media center if you are interested in becoming a parent volunteer.
Ms. Boggs is our media specialist. Ms. Boggs enjoys traveling, reading, writing, photography, videography, painting, hiking, listening to and playing music, and spending time with her daughter, Maya. Her favorite books are The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley, The High King by Lloyd Alexander, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, anything by Mo Willems, and Napoleon by Kim Kennedy.
Mrs. Stitely is our media clerk. Mrs. Stitely enjoys reading, gardening, and watching her three daughters play basketball, softball, and soccer. Her favorite books are the Twilight series and the Harry Potter series.
When it comes to searching online for information, it is sometimes hard to know where to begin. The following are some databases that students have access to from both school and home. These databases are great places to begin research because the reading level is more appropriate for elementary age students and the information included is reliable. A password is needed to access these databases from home. Stop by the media center to pick up a list of the passwords, or request a list of the passwords via email from Ms. Boggs.
