Student Recogition
There are several ways that students can earn awards and/or gain recognition. If there are any questions about the information below, please speak to your student's School Counselor.
Senior Awards
The following awards will be presented at the Senior Awards Ceremony that is held the week of graduation:
Senior Recognition
Awarded to all seniors who have been on the Honor Roll for 15 consecutive marking periods and are expected to be on it for the 16th marking period.
Principal's Recognition
Awarded to all seniors who have successfully completed at least four (4) AP classes.
The President's Education Awards Program-Outstanding Academic Excellence
Awarded to seniors who have at least 3.5 non-weighted academic GPA and SAT scores of 650 Math and 630 Verbal or ACT composite score of 27 or higher.
Outstanding Academic Achievement
Awarded to seniors who have at least 2.5 overall projected GPA through the eighth semester and have demonstrated high motivation, initiative, integrity, intellectual depth, leadership qualities and exceptional judgment. Nominations are made from the North Carroll academic departments.
The Brinton Memorial Award
Presented to the senior boy and girl who have exhibited good citizenship, character, and service to the school.
The Engle Memorial Award
Presented to the senior boy and girl who have made significant personal growth and progress during high school.
The Balfour Key
Awarded to the senior named as the top ranking scholar and who best exemplifies those qualities of character, loyalty and service to the school.
The Governor's State Merit Scholars Award
Awarded to the seniors who are in the top 5% of the graduating class. These students receive a Merit Scholastic Certificate from the State of Maryland.
The Maryland Scholars Program
Seniors are recognized as a Maryland Scholar upon successful completion of the Maryland Scholars approved course of study set by the Maryland Business Roundtable. Students must have at least a 2.5 unweighted GPA, successfully complete a rigorous academic course of study including Algebra II and at least two credits of the same world language and three (3) lab sciences including Physics. Students with a 3.5 GPA will be given recognition as an Honors student.
AP Scholars
Students are recognized by the AP Program in the following ways:
AP Scholar
Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, AND scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
AP Scholar with Distinction
Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, AND scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
State AP Scholar
Granted to the one male and one female student in each U.S. state and the District of Columbia with scores of 3 or higher on the greatest number of AP Exams, AND THEN the highest average score (at least 3.5) on all AP Exams taken.
National AP Scholar
Granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, AND scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.
Student of the Month
Student of the Month/Character Education Awards
Presented to students each month who exhibit the character of the month. Nominations are submitted by faculty and staff.
National Merit Scholarship Program
This is an annual academic competition among high school juniors for recognition and college scholarships. The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is the qualifying test for entry into the National Merit Program. The competition spans from entry in October until the spring of the following year when scholarships for college undergraduate study is awarded.
Maryland Distinguished Scholars
This program honors Maryland high school juniors for superior academic achievement, for exceptional talent in the arts, or for achieving finalist status in the National Merit/National Achievement Scholarship Program. Although the student may qualify for this award in one or more of these categories, only one Distinguished Scholar award will be offered. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage Maryland students to attend a Maryland institution. The award amount is $3,000 a year and is renewable three times for a total value of $12,000. Three hundred and fifty new scholarships are awarded annually to Maryland residents.
