Jessica Wroten, Media Specialist & Donna Hamby, Media Clerk The media program encourages students and staff to be lifelong users of information and ideas. Media lessons support the school improvement plan, county and state standards, as well as individual needs and requests. Our staff instructs students, staff, and parents how to utilize technology and research skills to become independent and proficient users of information. Mt. Airy Elementary School's media center houses over 9,000 items! Our third, fourth, and fifth graders and staff may check out materials from nonfiction, fiction, picture books, magazines, as well as audio books. Our fiction series collection is growing . . . over forty selections can be found here! By providing many exciting forms of media, such as print and electronic resources, we foster a love of reading . . . which will last a lifetime. Students may check out either one magazine and one book, or two books each week, and are due in one week. Books which are not labeled as "new" may be renewed for an extra week. Third and fourth graders have book selection weekly during media class. Fifth graders have alternate check out weeks, to allow time for more in-depth media lessons. Open check out during homeroom from 8:05-8:30 on Mondays and Thursdays, allows students to exchange their materials as often as desired. The only exception is if students have media class that day, then they will be asked to wait until that time to exchange books as this is part of their lesson.
