Gifted and Talented

"The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena... who strives valiantly, who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in worthy causes. Who, at best, knows the triumph of high achievement and who, at worst, if he fails, fails while daring greatly so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat."
- Theodore Roosevelt

"My hope, my prayer, my dream, is that by the time I die, every fourth and fifth grader in the U.S. can get the same kind of recognition for excellent academic performance and humanitarian qualities as they can for shooting a 25-foot jump shot."
-Dr. Ben Carson
At LSE, great learners take risks... are you willing to get into the arena?
Why has the Extended Enrichment Program (EEP) become the Gifted and Talented Program?
The GT program, formerly known as EEP, has undergone significant updating in order to align with No Child Left Behind legislation and the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) standards. Our department name change is one of those modifications, but you may also see a difference in our identification process as well as a more flexible approach to servicing children who show above average ability. You will find the adaptations to your child's instruction will better align with Carroll County Curriculum and better meet your child's intellectual needs!
Hello! I am Alaina Haerbig, the GT teacher here at Linton. I am new to Carroll County Public Schools, but not new to the field of education! I have been teaching for fourteen years, the last ten of which have been in Gifted and Talented. I have a Masters' Degree from Johns Hopkins University in GT, and have worked at JHU's Center for Talented Youth as well. I am excited about applying these experiences to the wonderful environment at Linton Springs.
My husband Chris and I have two sons, in 4th and 5th grade in CCPS, and three daughters. We are also foster parents, so sometimes we have a full house! Like many of you, we are busy with sports, neighborhood activities, religious and community service, etc. It is wonderful to finally be working in the county where we live, as I am meeting many of you at football practice and other local events. Please take a minute to introduce yourself if we run into each other!
Please feel free to contact me with general questions or comments at abhaerb@k12.carr.org. If you would like to discuss your child specifically, please contact me by phone at 410-715-3280 or send a note requesting a face to face conference. I am always happy to meet with you!
Due to the high number of students involved in the LSE GT program, we are very fortunate to have GT services the equivalent of four days per week. In order to service more children on a more consistent basis, Mrs. Winner has allowed me to modify that schedule so that I am here every day beginning at 9:15. I anticipate working with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders twice a week in both ILA and Math, and meeting with 2nd graders to implement the PETS (Primary Education Thinking Skills) program later in the year.
Volunteers needed
Research shows that the most successful students have parents who are involved in their schooling. What better way to tell your child that you value rigorous learning than to become involved in their GT experience? If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know by calling or emailing me. You can help on an as-needed basis, or come in at a regular time each week if you'd like.
