Artist Of The Week
Artists of the Week -
Featured on Our WLSE Television Program
Featured every Friday morning on the WLSE television program at 8:00 AM is the Artist of the Week. Students are interviewed and have the opportunity to discuss their artwork, share their thoughts on what they learned, how they created it, and what they liked best about doing the project. The artwork is then displayed in the hallway for all to enjoy.
Art Education Philosophy
Art is a fundamental element of human life and experience; it is a major discipline as essential to education as language arts and science.
The visual arts have been an important dimension of every culture in the history of man. Visual imagery is the root of language; therefore, visual art is a powerful tool of communication and development.
Evidence supports that the study and practice of art serves to facilitate the growth of important skills in general education including cognition, critical analysis, and psychomotor development.
Children grow in their creative capacities, creative problem solving skills, and ability to derive aesthetic judgements from the richness and complexity of the images of art.
For the elementary child, art is an important language. The child will continue to develop this language by being exposed to:
1. The development and improvement of artistic processes and techniques.
2. Connections to student's historical/cultural and social learning as it relates to the Core Curriculum.
3. Visual expression and creative problem solving.
4. Development and refining student's aesthetic awareness.
Therefore, experiences in Art Education should be structured and sequenced to provide the child with a greater appreciation and understanding of this visual language.
Fine Arts Mission Statement
The mission of the Fine Arts Programs in the Carroll County Public Schools is to equip the students with the ability to develop their skills and aesthetic appreciation throughout their educational experience so they understand that the arts are a seamless part of their lives and the world around them. Students will have the opportunity to explore and develop their abilities in the Fine Arts through a variety of mediums and modalities. The Fine Arts instructional programs will be designed to support success for all students in reaching the content and achievement standards in the arts established by the State of Maryland.

I'll leave you with a thought from artist Pablo Picasso- "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."
