Artist In Residence

"Our Neighborhood" Mural Artist in Resident, Sylvia Benitez, spent 2 weeks this year at Linton Springs, working with students in grade 1 through 5, creating a mural in the style of pointillism. The mural consists of 9 panels with a total length of 35 feet. Invented by artist George Seurat in the 1800's, pointillism is a style of painting using dots of color applied very close together. The murals were also influenced by the landscape art of Grandma Moses. Students, parents, and staff participated in creating the panels which are permanently displayed in the lobby area near the gym and cafeteria. The residency, sponsored by the Maryland State Arts Council Artist in Education Program, was made possible by funding from a Maryland State Arts Council grant and the Linton Springs PTA.
In March of 2006, Linton Springs was fortunate to have Sylvia Benitez, Artist in Residence, visit and work with all students in grades 1 through 5, to create a series of panels with the theme "What We Learn In School". Students worked in the art room with Ms. Benitez and Mrs. Nordling for 2 weeks to create the 36 colorful and informative panels 8 feet tall and 1 foot wide. Also, 6 horizontal panels were created that are permanently displayed in the front lobby of the school. This project was funded by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Linton Springs PTA.
