A GUIDE TO LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS
2006-2007
Academic Challenge
Advisor: Mr. Giffhorn
The Academic Challenge Club at Liberty is a quiz bowl and trivia team.
The club competes against other Carroll County schools and in several
tournaments. The club is open to all students. Practice times will be
determined at the first meeting.
Allies Club
Advisor: Ms. N. Williams
The Allies Club will help students understand the complexities of alternate
lifestyles.
Art Club
Advisor: Ms. Morris, Mrs. Latane - Valis
Dues $3.00
The Art Club recognizes students who have shown outstanding ability
in art. The club strives to foster excellence and dedication in the
study of art and to bring art to the attention of the school and community;
this is done by raising awareness of art in all aspects of life. The
Art club brings in speakers, information on art colleges and films to
talk about. Students will also participate in projects done around the
school.
Note: Students must be currently enrolled in an art class.
Audio-Visual Club
(AV Club)
Advisor: Ms. Dina Shein
Dues $2.00
The AV club provides technical support (lights and sound) for dramatic
productions. A member may also be involved in assembly programs and
provide assistance to outside groups which use the auditorium. Students
who are interested in behind - the - scenes activities with productions
may seek membership from the advisor.
Book Review Club
Advisor: Ms. Shein and Mrs. Singer
Book Review Club meets once a month after school to discuss, review
and analyze books they have read. Books are chosen by the group and
Ms. Shein.
Chorus Club
Advisor: Ms. Null
Chorus is an after school club as well as a class for students who are
interested in singing. Students perform all types of songs from classical,
to Christmas carols, to rock. The chorus competes in the annual Estedfed
Concert at Westminster High School. Singers can also compete for a for
a spot on the County and State Chorus level.

The Class Board or Officers are in charge of planning what the class
will accomplish over the year. They plan dances, fundraisers, service
projects, and class activities. They are also in charge of collecting
class dues and delegating them for class activities.
Computer Club
Advisor: Open
The Computer Club serves the school and the student body. Members use
the resources of the Internet, work on building the Liberty High School
home page, and vreat computer-generated music and graphics. The club
meets regularly after school as well as on Club Days.
Debate Club
Advisor: Mrs. Bosnic
The Debate Club will work toward techniques, skills and opportunities
to encourage and develop the art of successful debating. All students
are welcome and encouraged to join.
Destination Imagination
Advisor: Mr. Drew
Only seven creative individuals will make the DI Team. They will then
train in creative problem-solving, improvisational and acting skills
and thinking "outside the box" in order to stage their own
production at the state and national levels. Members need to be prepared
to build, think, play and learn at new and dynamic plateaus. It is like
Odyssey of the Mind, but more fun and less pasta!
.Drama Club
Advisor: Mrs. Schnorr
Drama Club is for students who are interested in the theater arts and
performance. The clubs activities include two or three major performances
a year. There are also two Traveling Troupes, an Improvisational Group
and a Readers’ Theater that perform for local elementary schools.
Through the club, there are also opportunities to belong to drug and
alcohol awareness troupes and travel to professional performances and
workshops. Through active participation in these programs, students
can become members of the National Thesbians.
FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America)
Advisor: Mrs.Andrews
Dues $3.00
Future Business Leaders of America serves students seeking careers in
business and business education. FBLA helps members nationwide and abroad
turn their ambitions and abilities into financial success and professional
recognition. As an FBLA member, a student can begin the climb up the
career ladder. FBLA helps develop self-confidence, business skills,
and effective money management. Membership offers opportunities to travel
and gain civic pride. Most importantly, it helps ease the transition
from school to work.
FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes)
Advisor: Mr. Hallis and Mrs. O'Behan
FCA is a huddle group striving to grow spiritually; reaching out to
others both in word and deed with gospel, encouraging and supporting
each other through God's word and seeking accountability to each other
and God. FCA is open to all students. FCA meets every Thursday at 7
am.
FFA
Advisor: Mrs. Linfield
Dues $7.00
The FFA is an organization of students interested in agricultural education.
The primary aim of the FFA is the development of agricultural leadership,
cooperation and citizenship. FFA members participate in pubic speaking,
skills contests, chapter meetings, award and recognition programs, committees
and community projects. All activities provide FFA members with opportunities
to develop personal leadership skills.
Note: Students must be currently enrolled in an agri-science class.
French Club
Advisor: Mr. Bair
French club provides students with extensions of French Conversation
and cultural activities introduced in French classes at Liberty. Students
may use the Internet to find and correspond with native French speaking
students.

German Club
Advisor: Mrs. Hackett
The German Club provides a source of language and enrichment and camaraderie
for students studying German. Members decide about cultural and language
related activities the club will pursue throughout the year.

Hebrew Club
Advisor: Ms. Shein
The Hebrew Club will promote the understanding of the Hebrew language,
its history and traditions. Members of the club will learn basic Hebrew
greetings, Israeli traditions, and will discuss Israel's place in the
world today as well as its relationship to the United States.
Key Club
Advisor: Mrs. Regan
The Key Club is an international service organization and found in many
US high schools. In the past school year members participated in Trick-or-Treat
for UNICEF mitten collections, hurricane donations and March of Dimes.
Liberty Film Society
Advisor: Ms. Shein and Mr. Bair
LHS International Film Society aims at enriching and exposing our students
to a variety of international films. The movies are chosen for their
quality, cultural heritage and their global perspective of life. The
club will view one film per month after school and discuss the film,
its method and our society.
Mathletes
Advisor: Mr.Fuhr
Mathletes is an after-school club where students solve math problems
in an attempt to improve their math skills and earn extra credit in
their math classes. Students take a monthly 5-question test and then
check their problems. There is friendly competition for the “Rookie
of the Year” and “Best Mathlete” awards.
Model UN
Advisor: Mrs. DILeonardi
Model United Nations is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and
other multilateral bodies. Students step into the shoes of ambassadors
from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization's
agenda. Model UN culminates with a delegation trip to the Maryland Conference
held at Johns Hopkins in March. UN delegates need to be confident about
speaking in front of large groups of people, capable of preparing position
papers following indepth research, and able to work well with others.
Multicultural Club
Advisor: Ms. Shein and Mrs. Singer
The Multicultural Club plans and produces multi -cultural activities
and displays for students and staff throughout the school year. The
club strives to create a climate of respect and acceptance of individual
differences.

National Honor Society
(NHS)
Advisor: Mr. Drew
Dues $5.00
The National Honor Society has four goals for members to uphold: scholarship,
service, leadership and character. Members participate in activities
and projects that benefit the school and community, attend meetings,
and sponsor scholarships for members and non-members. Membership in
NHS is not guaranteed. A student is eligible for membership after three
semesters with a cumulative 4.0 GPA with no final grades of D or F.
The Faculty Council grants membership to those who meet all established
criteria. For more information about NHS membership, refer to the LHS
Student Handbook.
Robotics Team
Advisor: Mr. Deitrich and Mrs. Young
The Robotics Club builds and completes a robot in the FIRST (For Inspiration
and Recognition of Science and Technology) competition in the spring.
The process involves an ambitious business plan, project management,
designing a web site, researching, and building the robot, developing
strategies and working with other teams. The team meets throughout of
year, and welcomes members with interests in a variety of areas.

Russian Club
Advisor: Mrs. Shipley
The Russian Club will provide exposure to the Russian Language and Culture.
Members will decide on cultural and language-related activities for
the year.
Science Club
Advisor: Mrs. Mathias
Our missions is to promote interest and enthusiasm for science throughout
our school and community. To accomplish this we will continue encouraging
5th grade students at Eldersburg Elementary to be environmentally conscientious
through hands-on demonstrations. Also the science club is working on
getting a Science Fair up and running at Liberty High School.
Ski and Snowboard Club
Advisor: Ms. Nicholson
This activity is open to all Liberty students who have an interest in
snow skiing and snowboarding. The Ski Club plans after school trips
to ski slopes in the area and encourages participation by both beginners
and more advanced skiers. Equipment is availablie for rental at the
ski areas.
Spanish Club
Advisor: Mrs. Hudson
Dues $3.00
The goals of the Spanish Club are to provide fellowship with other Spanish
speaking students, to enrich students’ cultural awareness of Spanish
speaking countries, to strengthen communication skills and to develop
relationships with native speakers through the Internet.
Note: Students must be currently enrolled in Spanish III, IV, or V and
have at least a B average.
Student Government Association
(SGA)
Advisor: Mr. Giese, Mrs. DiLeonardi, and Mr. Szocik
The Liberty High School Student Government Association is the voice
of the student body. They represent the student body in negotiations
with the administration and participate in projects to benefit the school
and the community. Past projects have been Homecoming, blood drives,
garden tending, and the campaign for hats in school.
Students must be elected or appointed to become a member. To hold office,
one must have at least a 2.0 GPA. Elections are held for each office,
with the exception of freshmen representatives, in the spring of each
school year. Representatives are elected from each grade, as well as
two students appointed by the principal. Along with the officers, these
students make up the Association. Classes may send representatives to
the meetings.
Teenage Republicans
Club
Advisor: Mr. Cook
These students will spread awareness of the political process and ancourage
student involvement in c ampaigning, lobbying and political debate.
They will also develop debate skills to better support the positions
outlined in the platform of the Republican organization.
Varsity Club
Advisor: Mrs.Laura Gillen and Mrs. Beth Kobett
This organization welcomes for membership all Liberty High students
who are involved in one or more varsity sports at our school. Members
encourage participation in the interscholastic athletics program, promote
school spirit, and support the efforts of student athletes on and off
the field.
Writer's Club
Advisors: Open
The Creative Writing Club is a writing club created by students for
students. Our writers share origional works of poetry and prose in an
environment of fellow origional thinkers. Members also look at popular
authors and analyze their works in a round table discussion. Opportunities
are provided for writing contests, workshops and publication of Liberty's
literary magazine, Aurora. |
