Electronic Usage in college

INTRODUCTION

You are beginning your research. You know the topic question. You go to Google and Wikipedia and the information is all there. You turn in your paper and it comes back with an “F” Whoa… what happened. You got stuck with one of those professors who went to school in the 1980’s before the internet and he/she has decided that your source materials are suspect. Why is that –you made it through high school with these methods—now what??

TASK

Explore websites to see what resources are offered that can help you make more intelligent research decisions. Along the way learn about libraries in a way you may not have used them in high school.

Process

Go to the websites indicated and answer the questions.
The Carroll County Public Library website can be a familiar place to go and find materials—this site will put you into the state website which is very comprehensive.

  1. Click on ONLINE REFERENCE
  2. Click on Magazine Index
  3. Do an Advanced Search
  4. Search “best buys in colleges” in periodical articles that are full text and 2-3 pages long from January 2009 thru May 2009
  5. How many articles have you found?
  6. What terms could you use to narrow your search?

  1. Go to the library page
  2. Find the electronic databases
  3. How many databases does the library provide?
  4. Search for the book Team of Rivals What is the call #
  5. Search the Carroll Community College library for the book Team of Rivals. What is the call #

Go to http://carrollcc.edu/

  1. Using this #0082846. Find an article about Indira Gandhi in one of the ebooks. What is the book title?
  2. What page is the article found on?
  3. We will pause here for discussion on call numbers/cataloging and user friendliness of the web pages
  4. Go to the web page of the college you will be attending
  5. How many databases in the library?
  6. Which cataloging system do they use?
  7. Do they have more than one library on campus?
  8. re they part of a bigger system?
  9. Do they have interlibrary loan with other libraries that are close to them?
