Service Activities
Members are required to participate in at least two (2) NHS activities per quarter. Newly inducted members are required to participate in two (2) their first year. All members must complete one session of tutoring. The purpose of the activities system is to provide an objective means of assessing members’ continued active participation in the NHS and their maintenance of the election standards. Members should be primarily motivated to participate in NHS, school, community, and individual activities based on their desire to fulfill their NHS induction pledge rather than to merely accumulate service activities. Many activities in your community are also eligible.
Honor Stoles
- Maintain a minimum weighted, cumulative GPA of 3.75 through the end of the 4th marking period of senior year
- Fulfill all LHS NHS member obligations
- Meet attendance and punctuality responsibilities as determined by the advisor(s)
- Voluntarily serve on at least 2 NHS activities (beyond the required obligations of two (2) per quarter) during each year of membership. To receive credit for participation, members must attend and actively participate in all organizational meetings for the committees, any subsequent meetings, and the activities themselves. Verification of attendance and participation will be determined by NHS members’ signatures on sign-out sheets available at the end of meetings and activities. Falsification of participation in/attendance to these committee meetings and/or NHS activities will be considered a violation of the LHS Honor Code and grounds for immediate dismissal from NHS.
- Embody the NHS tenets of leadership, service, and character
Wearing NHS honor stoles at graduation activities is a privilege granted by local NHS chapters to deserving NHS senior members. Again, this is a privilege and not a guaranteed recognition by the national organization simply for being an NHS member.
Election of New Members
- The election of members to this chapter of the National Honor Society shall be by a chapter Faculty Council consisting of five voting members and chaired by the advisor (non-voting).
- Sophomore, Junior, and Senior students become eligible for an NHS membership application by having maintained a minimum 3.75 weighted, cumulative GPA. Freshmen are not eligible for membership in NHS.
- All eligible students will be notified by letter and provided with
1.) A Student Activity Information Packet
2.) Four Sponsor Forms
3.) CCPS’s NHS Guidelines
4.) Optional Essay Form
5.) Required Parent-Student Signature Form
- All paperwork must be complete in order for an application to be considered. A candidate is not permitted to revise an application once he or she has turned it in or once the deadline has passed.
- Faculty Council members and the NHS advisor are not eligible to write a recommendation form. The Faculty Council will review all documentation in order to assess their leadership, service, and character.
- Applicants are welcome to attend an informational meeting held the week they receive their applications.
- An active member of the NHS who transfers from this school will be given a letter indicating his/her membership status and signed by the principal and advisor.
- An active member of the NHS who transfers to this school will be automatically accepted for membership in this chapter. The transfer member must maintain the membership requirements for this chapter in order to retain his/her membership.
