Substance Abuse Prevention


.The function of this position is to investigate and implement strategies which support the research based risk and protective factors associated with substance abuse. The position is funded by the Safe and Drug Free Schools Grant as part of S.A.F.E. (School Accountability Funding for excellence). The Coordinator offers presentations and technical assistance to schools and the community, and provides training and support for funded programs.

Students Helping Others and Understanding Themselves (S.H.O.U.T) is a peer leadership program designed for middle school students: To provide experiences that will help participants practice skills in relationship building; to gain knowledge about oneself and how one fits into the environment; to identify innate leadership skills and develop these abilities; to develop an understanding of personal values and how they effect each individual's behavioral guidelines; to develop a variety of skills that can be used to help plan ind implement activities; to recognize the danger of drug use and identify strategies to resist the pressure to use drugs; to practice decision-making skills and compromising; to have fun individually and as a group.

Parent newsletters and parent involvement newsletters containing generic parenting education and other important information are provided as follows: The Educators Notebook on Parent Involvement, are provided monthly to all school administrators. A subscribed newsletter, Parents make the difference!, is provided online to all elementary schools to included in their monthly parent newsletter in whole or in part. The School Readiness Edition is provided to pre-school programs and agencies for their use. Each family with a child at the secondary level receives a monthly newsletter, Parents Still make the difference!

The Maryland Student Assistance Program began in 1987 in the effort to identify students whose behavior, attendance, performance or grades indicate that they may be at risk for substance abuse. School based teams then work with families to refer them for help. The teams may consist of teachers, administrators, the school nurse, Pupil Personnel Worker, Guidance counselor, school psychologist and an adolescent addiction counselor from Junction, Inc..
