STEM in Carroll County Public Schools
STEM
- Current Events
STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics. A commission authored and
investigated Rising Above the Gathering Storm, a work
which addressed U.S. competitivness and pre-eminence in
the area of science and technology. Many of the ideas
discussed by the commission were later captured in an
article by Shirley Ann Jackson titled,Waking
Up to the "Quiet Crisis" in the United States
(read it here).
To address the commission's four recommendations,
a STEM initiative was created in Maryland. As a result,
the Carroll County Public School System is operating under
an implementation grant issued by the Maryland State Department
of Education. This grant has an embedded environmental
theme. Projects and curriculum for grades four through
12 will be impacted by this particular grant. Additional
resources to expand the program to grades K-12 have been
utilized. All students will have exposure to STEM in Carroll
Schools. The emphasis of these projects is to reach the
following goals:
-
Increase student interest
and participation in science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics.
-
Increase student knowledge
and understanding about careers in science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics.
-
Increase student ability
to apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
concepts and skills in integrated and meaningful ways.
-
Increase the active
participation, collaboration, and professional growth
of educators in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics.
