Wikis

Wikis (short form of the Hawaiian wiki-wiki, meaning quick) provide a unique collaborative online Webspace where anyone can contribute to and edit content. Wikis can also be created to allow only registered users to access content in order to facilitate small group project development, group assignments and group authoring.

Wikis really challenge the lines of traditional copyright and intellectual property as they represent a collective effort. When using this type of writing environment, it is important for all participants to practice ethical behavior and digital citizenship as outlined in the Maryland Technology Literacy Standards for Students.

How can I use wikis?

  • Curriculum development

  • Group assignments and collaborative research

  • Group authoring and project development

Carroll County Public Schools has developed Wiki Guidelines for the Classroom that must be followed. The only wiki site that is approved for classroom use is:http://www.wikispaces.com/site/for/teachers. This link will take you to the registration page to request an ad-free wiki for educational use.

Process for Requesting Approval for Use of a Wiki in the Classroom

Please complete the following when requesting approval to use a wiki for classroom instruction:

  • Read and follow the CCPS Wiki Guidelines.

  • Complete the Web 2.0 Wiki Planning Form.

  • Share the form with your administrator and content area supervisor and have them sign the planning form. Once both have signed, you are now free to use the wiki with your students.

  • Pony a copy of the Wiki Planning Form with signatures to Paula Sandridge at Technology Services or Kelly Hammond at Curriculum/Instruction.

  • It is recommended that you inform the parents of the students in the wiki project. A sample letter that you can adapt can be found here that includes a Blog and Wiki Guidelines permission form.

** Note - If you intend for the wiki to be used with adult staff for professional development or school-related professional activities, you do not need to complete a planning form but you are asked to use wikispaces.com.

Wiki Example

A group of Northwest Middle School students participated in a wiki pilot during the school year '08-'09. You can visit the wiki to learn more about the Robert Moton High School Project and view an exceptional example of an instructional wiki. The pilot used the wiki tool - pbworks.com - but CCPS has approved wikispaces.com to be used as the single wiki tool.
