ESOL Services

In a plug-in service model, ESOL Resource Teachers work in the mainstream classroom modifying the curriculum based on the unique language needs and proficiency levels of students.

Roles of the ESOL Resource Teacher (plug-in)

- pre-teach concepts related to specific academic subjects

- clarify assignments

- provide additional background knowledge

- ensure student comprehension of academic material

In a pull-out service model, English language learners receive scheduled instruction based on individual language/content goals.  Services are delivered one-on-one or in small groups.  

Roles of the ESOL Resource Teacher (pull-out)

- practice/support reading and writing skills

- engage students in hands-on language learning activities

- provide phonics and basic literacy instruction

- teach grammar and spelling rules

- practice listening comprehension skills

- utilize speaking and engage in pronunciation exercises

- provide explicit academic vocabulary
