Arts
ART VOCAL MUSIC INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade have Art class once a week for a one hour period, and Mrs. Barbara Hammond is our full-time art teacher. Students experience the use of a wide range of art media. These include drawing materials such as pencil, crayon, pastel, chalk, charcoal, marker, pen and ink, and scratchboard. They also paint with both tempera and watercolor each year. Other two-dimensional work includes collage and printmaking. Since our facilities include a kiln for firing clay work, students have opportunities to work in three dimensions. Hand-building techniques in clay are begun in first grade, and are sequentially built upon each year. Students also learn paper sculpting and papier-mache techniques to increase their knowledge of three-dimensional art. Textile design is also part of our curriculum, as students learn the basics of weaving and fabric printing. Art history is interwoven throughout the studio activities, as students learn about artists and historical periods from countries around the world. Art Room Mission Statement Students at Hampstead Elementary receive 60 minutes of general music instruction per week. The music skills learned in general music may be extended in fourth and fifth grades by participation in band and/or chorus. The most basic elements of general music education are literacy in pitch and rhythm. The concepts introduced each year continue throughout the grades and are added to or revisited at a more sophisticated level. In Art class, we learn how to improve our skills as we use a variety of materials. We learn about other artists and cultures. We always put forth our best efforts as we express our creativity and have fun!
As long as scheduling and staffing situations allow, each student will have an opportunity to participate in a grade-level musical production. This usually occurs in third grade. Music instruction at Hampstead Elementary is based on the Dalcroze, Orff, and Kodaly philosophies and approaches of music education for children. More information on these approaches is available upon request.
Learning to play a musical instrument is a very valuable experience for your child. Playing an instrument unlocks a lifetime of musical enjoyment while also teaching students important thinking skills, physical coordination, personal expression, and self-confidence. The process of making music unlocks countless opportunities for those who spend the time and energy it takes to learn to be an amateur musician. Some may even go on to make a living based on the abilities they can begin to develop in our instrumental music program. Fourth and fifth graders have the opportunity to perform in the instrumental music program. Recruiting takes place in the month of September and students can choose to play flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, percussion, violin, viola or cello. Students have two pull-out lessons each week and perform two concerts each year, usually in December and May.
