Francis Scott Key Athletic Philosophy
|
Athletics are a potential educative force of great power which can, and do, provide experiences not found in other segments of the school program. Their existence should enhance the attainment of the stated objectives of the institution. Francis Scott Key High School will enter into athletic organizations composed of institutions similar in many respects to itself. We will adhere to those principles, standards, and regulations of those organizations to which we belong. Just as the academic programs of institutions throughout the state differ, so will the athletic program of Francis Scott Key High School differ in some ways from the athletic programs of other institutions. The specifics of athletic policy will be formulated by the school's athletic council after all due consideration has been given to the concerns involved.

The predominant number of our opponents will be from the Monocacy Valley Athletic League from which we belong and others scheduled from schools which we are most nearly similar, with consideration being given to geographical location, size, and program. All students who have, or wish to attempt to develop, those special abilities and advanced skills necessary to compete in interscholastic sports will be encouraged to participate on several teams. A wide range of athletic teams at various competitive levels will be sponsored consistent with the school's ability to provide adequate facilities and equipment and competent staff within economic limitations and consistent with sufficient student interest to insure an appropriate number of participants to field a representative team .

Just as we are dedicated to strive for academic excellence in the classroom, we are also committed to strive for athletic excellence on the playing field. Winning, although a desirable and much sought commodity, is not the sole criterion upon which to measure the success of an athletic team and its members. What they have accomplished and learned, collectively and individually, is far more important.
