50th Anniversary Committee Accomplishments
As we near the end of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary, the committee would like to report on its accomplishments for the 2008-2009 school year.
- The Committee was formed in the 2007-2008 school year and monthly meetings have been held since inception.
- Attempts to organize alumni data through Harris Connect resulted in the Alumni Directory which was published in the summer of 2008 with mixed reviews.
- The process of restoring a complete set of FSK yearbooks was initiated and successfully concluded. Yearbooks have been stored and have been placed on limited access.
- Summer 2008 saw the completion of our 50th Anniversary wall which displays 49 years of graduated classes (1960-2007). The original 1959 bronze school plaque has also been refurbished and hung at FSK's entrance.
- An assembly on the first day of school was held in the stadium for the entire school. Each student was given a commemorative 50th Anniverary t-shirt and staff members were given a navy blue polo shirt to wear on the first day. A commemorative picture was taken of all staff and students in their shirts gifted by the 50th Anniversary Committee.
- Fall Alumni Sports Day was held (September 13,2008), returning over 100 alumni from the past 50 years to participate in volleyball, hockey, soccer, cheerleading, football and cross country.
- Winter Alumni Sports Day was held (January 31, 2009), creating games for more than 150 alumni in basketball, cheerleading, wrestling, and volleyball.
- A variety of Alumni Recognitions for each sport throughout the fall and winter.
- A special band weekend for band alumni was held January 30-31, 2009.
- The Choral Department hosted an evening of music featuring former choral directors and students in May.
- A successful faculty social was held on May 29th with many former teachers and staff returning. The evening featured socializing, a tour of the building, and a showing of the pictorial history of FSK developed by Brianna Watkins and Sara Yost. These DVD's are available at the school for $10.
- On Sunday, May 31st, 65 members of the FSK family gathered in Washington D.C. to enjoy an afternoon cruise down the Potomac River. Along with the good food, great scenery, and commaraderie, we were delighted to have the presence of our very first principal, Mr. Henry Kanowitz who opened FSK in 1959.
The culminating event will be on Saturday, June 6th at McDaniel College as we celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2009.
Thank you - 50th Anniversary Committee, School Administration and Staff, and the 50 years of Alumni who have maintained a relationship with Francis Scott Key High School. That has made all the difference!
