Attendance

Attendance
School law requires all children to be in school each day. The school year consists of 180 regularly scheduled school days. The school day is from 8:35 am - 3:05 pm.

Children who come to school every day on time are more successful in school. They practice good habits that they will use through high school. Bringing your child to school late or letting them stay home from school when they are able to attend causes them to get behind the other students in their class.

Your child’s attendance will be written on each report card and is determined as follows:

  • students arriving to school between 8:35 am and 11:50 am will be marked tardy
  • students arriving to school after 11:50 will be marked ½ day absent in the morning
  • students leaving school between 11:50 - 3:05 will be marked as leaving early (tardy in the afternoon)
  • students leaving school before 11:50 will be marked as ½ day absent in the afternoon
  • students who leave school for appointments and return to school within 3 ½ hours will be marked as tardy
  • students who leave school for appointments and are absent for more than 3 ½
hours will be marked as absent ½ day
  • Siblings of students who go on field trips that are signed out before 3:05 will be marked as tardy.

Written Excuses
A written excuse is required when a child is absent. The excuse must be received by the school within 2 school days of the child’s return to school and contain the date of absence, the reason, and the signature of the parent/guardian. (A sheet of absence/tardiness excuse forms are included in your child’s take home folder for your convenience. Additional forms available upon request). Without this information, the absence is coded “unlawful.”

  • A written excuse from the physician is required when a child is not able to participate in physical education.
  • A written note from the parent or guardian is required when a child is unable to go outside for recess for medical reasons.
    Arrival

Children may not come into the building before 8:15 a.m., since no adult supervision can be provided prior to that time. If needed, childcare is available in the school cafeteria before and after school by the YMCA (410-848-3660).
