Advanced Placement
Thank you for visiting our AP Program page!
Each year, Century High School has been proud to offer one of the most diverse offerings of AP courses in the county. In the last three years alone, we have seen not only a substantial increase in enrollment in the seventeen courses that serve as the core of our AP program, but students have elected to sit for other exams for which we did not previously offer courses: Macroeconomics, Statistics, U.S. Government, Comparative Government, 3D Studio Art, Art History and Spanish Language. Because of this growing interest in other AP course areas, Mr. Cockley and our Art, Social Studies and Math departments have been able to accommodate student interest by offering AP courses or supporting independant study arrangements. As interest grows in these other Advanced Placement areas, Century will make every effort to accommodate our community’s desire to see the widest range of AP course offerings possible.
The emphasis Century High School has placed on AP courses, particularly among college-bound students, rests not only in our desire to see students challenged at the highest levels, but on a growing body of data that suggests that students who take rigorous courses in high school and sit for the AP exam, even in areas outside of their intended area of study, are more likely to remain in college beyond their Freshmen year, and are more likely to graduate on time. Further, as area colleges become increasingly competitive, there is little doubt that admissions offices look towards evidence of AP course work as a reliable indication that students possess the will and the work ethic to manage college-level work. Century High School will therefore continue to develop new and creative ways to involve students, train teachers and coordinate resources so that all of our college-bound students will have an opportunity to take at least one AP-level course before graduating.
