Charles Carroll Elementary represents history as it stands proudly
along one of our nation's oldest roads, the Littlestown Pike. Civil
War troops - Union and Confederate - traveled this route as they left
the Shriver's homestead and traveled on to the Battle of Gettysburg.
Schools already played a role in this community as that period of history
passed.
Schools have been an important part of the area since 1838 when the Carroll Academy was built. A school at our present site was erected in 1921 when the Union Mills and Silver Run schools merged. A fire on October 23,1928 totally destroyed that structure. The community showed is strength as classes were housed at local halls to limit the instructional days lost. The Cornerstone of our present building was laid on May 9, 1929. That school building has remained as the center for the community throughout its existence. A May Festival is held each year as a celebration and reminder of
the community's ascension over the devastating fire. The building
sits high on the hill watching as history continues. A large boulder
accompanies the building with its tablet that recognizes those who
served in World War I. The names on the boulder, are names that our
students relate to and some even share. Today's roles represent the
six graduates of 1926 and the many graduating classes that have passed
through over the years. Our guest readers and volunteers are often
graduates of the school, but they are also our students, parents and
grandparents, aunts and uncles. Our volunteer list is a wonderful
sign of the role Charles Carroll Elementary plays in the community
and the role the community plays in Charles Carroll Elementary. |
