Liberty and Century Drama Clubs Win Awards at State Thespian Festival

Drama students from Liberty and Century High Schools received numerous awards at the Maryland State Thespian Festival on January 11 and 12, 2013. Students competed for scholarships and the opportunity to compete at the National Theatre Festival.
Liberty High School students Courtney Jarmush, Christy Czajkowski, and Emily Nupp each received a $32,000 scholarship from Rowan University. Bridget Lindsay won a $1,000 scholarship to the college of her choice in the Technical Scholarship Competition for her set design for “Tarzan.”
Six students achieved ratings of superior in their individual events and are among only 15 students in the state who will advance to the national competition:
Bridget Lindsay – Scenic Design
Anne Devine – Solo Musical Theatre
Christy Czajkowski – Acting
Maddie Stanley – Acting
Carly Anders – Solo Musical Theatre
Sarah Barker – Solo Musical Theatre.
Three of these students – Anne Devine, Christy Czajkowski, and Bridget Lindsay – received the highest scores in the individual event competitions.
Liberty Drama swept the top honors in all thirteen categories in the one act competition for the national premiere of their production “And.” They received awards for Best Sets, Props, Sound, Lights, Costumes, Hair and Makeup, Staging, Ensemble, Physical Work, Vocal Work, Best Truth in the World, Male Actor (Carter Johnson), and Female Actor – Christy Czajkowski. As the 2013 state champion, Liberty will be performing the play on the national stage in Lincoln, Nebraska in June.
Tony Cimino is the drama director at Liberty.
Century High School, led by drama director Lucas Hewitt, participated in the One Act portion of the Festival for the first time this year and was honored with five awards – Outstanding Lighting, Sound, Hair and Makeup, Physical Work, and Staging. Samuel McIntire and Maggie Neal were honored with Outstanding Acting Awards. Erin Berch received an award for making for All State Honor Thespian.
