The Fine Arts and Fitness Team at Parr’s Ridge Elementary School has been selected as the winner of the Maryland Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (MASCD) 2011 Team Excellence Award.
The Fine Arts and Fitness Team collaborates with other teachers to generate opportunities for student learning that span multiple content areas and curricular needs. They are actively involved in the development and implementation of the School Improvement Team, including the Parr’s Ridge Promises staff initiative and PRIDE, a student behavior program. The team also designs and initiates other full-school initiatives such as the Daily 5 classroom management model and KidTalk, where they problem solve strategies to enhance learning for those students who are struggling.
The team leads school-wide study groups for topics such as rigor, leadership, and 21st century learning skills and takes the lead in the school’s professional development links in which all teachers are invited to visit the classrooms of several of their peers to see evidence of best practices according to a pre-determined focus. They actively support and play an active role in many other activities, such as the Book Club, Green School initiatives, the weekly school news show, and the Readiness Fair to welcome prekindergarten students and families.
According to Cristina Gruss, Fine Arts Resource Specialist for Carroll County Public Schools, “The Fine Arts and Fitness Team at Parr’s Ridge is seamlessly supportive of the instruction that happens throughout the building in every classroom. There is truly a culture of integration.”
In 2010, Parr’s Ridge Elementary School received the National Blue Apple Award for its health education program, and its media program was recognized with the Mae I. Graham Award for outstanding school library media programs in the state of Maryland.
