Release Date: 9/16/2011 1:52:07 PM
Carroll County Public Schools and Matt Birk’s HIKE (Hope, Inspiration, Knowledge, and Education) Foundation kicked off the Ready, Set, Read! reading incentive partnership, in collaboration with Walmart and the Carroll County Times, on Tuesday, September 13, 2011, at Taneytown Elementary School. Ravens center Matt Birk was the guest speaker at the assembly. He shared his love of reading with students and gave a brief overview of the program.
Students in grades K-5 at all Carroll County elementary schools will participate in this program throughout the 2011-2012 school year. Every student will receive a notebook to track the number of minutes they read. The names of students who meet the reading and writing goals each quarter will be entered into their school’s quarterly drawing. Two students from each school will receive special prizes and their names will be listed in the Carroll County Times. Prizes include Ravens jerseys, footballs, and other team-related items, as well as books and gift cards. In May, one student in grades K-2 and one in grades 3-5 from each elementary school will be selected to take a special tour of M&T Stadium and have lunch with Matt.
Matt Birk’s HIKE Foundation launched Ready, Set, Read! in select Baltimore area schools in the fall of 2010. The goal of Ready, Set, Read!, sponsored by Walmart, is to motivate and encourage more than 100,000 elementary school children to read at home by the end of 2011.
Established in 2002, the mission of Matt Birk's HIKE Foundation is to provide at-risk Baltimore area children with the educational opportunities needed to excel in the classroom and in life. The HIKE Foundation impacts the lives of at-risk children by providing interactive programs and resources needed to guide a child through the key educational transitions between elementary, middle, high school and college.
