Kickoff Event to Highlight Concussion Awareness

Carroll County Public Schools, Carroll Hospital Center, and The Partnership for a Healthier Carroll County will present a Partnership for Concussion Awareness Kickoff on Thursday, August 25, 2011, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. The event will be held at The Portico of St. John, located at 43 Monroe Street in Westminster.
Guest speakers will present concussion information from the national, state, and community perspectives. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Gerard Gioia, a nationally recognized neuropsychologist from the Children’s National Medical Center.
An educational partnership agreement will be signed during this event and will include the Brain Injury Association of Maryland, Carroll County Department of Recreation and Parks, the Carroll County Health Department, Carroll Hospital Center, Central Maryland Rehabilitation Center, Maryland SportsCare and Rehabilitation, Dr. Gerard A. Gioia, The Partnership for a Healthier Carroll County and Carroll County Public Schools.
In May 2011, Governor Martin O’Malley signed into law two bills intended to protect Maryland’s student athletes from the dangers associated with concussions. Carroll County is implementing a concussion testing program and procedures to ensure the health and safety of students who suffer a head injury.
Recent research has raised the degree of concern regarding head injuries, specifically concussions. This research emphasizes the need to make a concerted effort to raise awareness of the dangers of concussions and to protect athletes at all levels, from professional to youth sports.
