Release Date: 5/6/2011 9:43:49 AM
The Eldersburg Elementary School Physical Education Department has been selected as a Maryland Physical Education Demonstration School for 2011-2013 by the Maryland Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD). Eldersburg Elementary is one of ten public schools selected from over 1,400 public schools eligible to apply for Demonstration School status.
The Maryland Physical Education Demonstration School Program recognizes exemplary physical education programs and teachers across the state and encourages visits to these sites by other physical educators. By doing this, innovative programs and good practices are shared and promoted statewide.
Every other school year, teams of professionals visit public schools which have applied to be a Maryland Demonstration School. After a staff review of the school's program and completion of the application, the team visits the candidate school and spends the day observing classes, looking at the curriculum, and evaluating the support of the school for the discipline of physical education.
Eldersburg Elementary provided the visitation team with evidence that supported their application showing documentation in criteria areas including quality of teaching, professionalism, philosophy, curriculum and planning, organization and administration, supplies, equipment and facilities, assessment and evaluation, and a full day observation from the team. Physical education teachers Billy Kavalos and Debbie Buenger will be recognized at the 2011 MAHPERD Convention in October for the high quality of teaching that is standard-based throughout the school year. They will receive a plaque and a banner to display at the school.
