Katie Hammack, a third grade teacher at Mt. Airy Elementary School, was honored by the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association as one of 36 teachers from across the country to receive the Teacher Excellence Award. This award is presented in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the profession and to her students.
Hammack has been instrumental in writing and piloting STEM curriculum at the elementary level. According to Supervisor of Elementary Education Cynthia Eckenrode, “Through lessons like this, Katie does an outstanding job of integrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics into her daily lessons.”
She routinely has her students involved in the engineering and design process in the classroom. For example, her students were asked to develop “high quality play dough” that could be used to make award plaques. The students followed the engineering design process where they “asked, imagined, planned, created, and improved” until they came up with the product.
